Based on a true event, this book tells the story of a town that wanted to make a wheel of their famous Cheshire cheese so big, President Thomas Jefferson would be able to serve it through his entire presidency when they gave it to him.
The process is filled with challenges…there are no presses big enough to handle the curds and no wheels wide enough to hold the 1275-pound cheese to age it. The innovative townspeople devise ways to overcome each challenge (including transporting it to Washington, DC, and getting it into the White House!) and ignore the naysayers who warn at each step, “It can’t be done”.
But it was done, and the Cheshire Cheese in fact remained on display (and available for nibbling) for a full year in the White House East Room (it was dismantled and served from the kitchen for another 2 years even after that!)
A story about an unique event in our country’s history and about determination and persistence.
