On this day in history…October 3

on October 3, 2013

East and West Germany, divided politically and physically since the end of World War II, reunited on October 3, 1990.  Though the Berlin Wall was torn down nine months previously and the Soviet Union did not dissolve for another year, many people consider this day, “Unity Day”, as the end of the Cold War.  For information on this event, click here.

Serge Shememann. When the Wall Came Down: the Berlin Wall and the fall of Soviet communism.

Articles from the archives of “The New York Times” and the author’s first-hand account of one of the greatest moments in European history relate the division of Berlin after World War II and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
